SHE ~ Diana ~ Goddess of the Hunt

Good morning! Thought I would share with you this lovely video in honour of Diana, Goddess of the Hunt, Queen of the Witches. It was She who originally called me to Witchcraft and She who took me up on my first hesitant prayers to the Goddesses and the Ancient Gods.

I was ten years old, and I had always been a very mystical child. Born into an agnostic family but encouraged to find my own way, I had been to every church that each one of my friends attended, and I found things there that I really liked, but there was always something that didn’t sit well with me. I think in retrospect it was the oppression of Eve and Her daughters that I disliked the most.

We started studying Greek mythology in school and I was fascinated. At about the same time I started having dreams that came true. Also at about that time, I, who had always been interested in astronomy, got a book out of the library on the planets, and there on the description of the moon was the Goddess Diana/Luna, in a beautiful rendering looking silvery and regal. My given name is Diane; I made the comparison immediately. My best friend and I started playing at being Priestesses of the Goddesses (she of Venus,) or being the Goddesses Themselves having adventures. We began to change the weather by the power of our Will to suit our games both indoors and outdoors, and I learned to speak to the trees and the rain and the water of the lake.

One night, feeling threatened by bullies, I looked up into a beautiful full silvery supermoon. I decided that I would pray to Her instead. I recited St. Patrick’s Rune, which I had learned from the novel “A Swiftly Tilting Planet,” and I twisted the snake bracelet on my wrist (an ouroboros) three times and asked for Her help. I professed my love and offered to be Her Priestess for real.

A couple of days later, I found a book called “Practical Candleburning Rituals” in my school library, written by a man named Raymond Buckland. So I guess She took me up on it. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Over time, I learned about Her nature as the Queen of the Witches as well as the Goddess of the Hunt and the Unconquered Maiden. I love all these aspects and continue to serve them as well as I may. I have worked with and developed a relationship with many other Goddesses, Whom I love dearly (to date, Hecate, Brighid, the Morrighan, the Lady of the Lake, Joan of Arc, and Erzulie, to name the ones who have been most prominent) and many of the Ancient Gods, but Diana has always remained.

My Craft name, Sable Aradia, is chosen partly because I recognize myself as a Daughter of Diana, and accept the path She would ask of me because it is a path I love; to teach Witchcraft to the populace, and to liberate the oppressed.
